Atlas Genius Talks Songwriting Process for “Trojans,” Being in a Family Band

Atlas Genius is getting some serious love on the alternative charts with “Trojans,” the first single from their recently-released debut album, When It Was Now.  Frontman Keith Jeffery says that while the track went through a number of revisions, it was the original version that wound up getting released.

“We had the music pretty much the way it is now and that inspired a set of lyrics and melody that I came up with at one point,” he tells ABC News Radio. “Not everyone was convinced that it was the right version so I think I wrote the song four times.  I think that you can overthink things…so we went back and I’m really glad that we used the version that I wanted to use.”

Keith, who shares the stage with his brothers Michael and Steven Jeffrey, adds that it can sometimes be difficult being in a band with members of your family. “It’s a double-edged sword,” he explains.  “We can be really honest with each other which can be great because you can just circumnavigate all the tiptoeing around something not being right.  But then of course, sometimes you’re a bit too free to criticize…and maybe sometimes that’s not the best thing for creativity.  But generally, I think it works well for us.”
